Artists in the classroom

Hilton hosts top artists

This week, Hilton College hosted four renowned, highly collectable and internationally recognized South African artists on campus. The Grade 12 “Artist in the Classroom Workshop” featured Nandipha Mntambo (photography and sculpture), Blessing Ngobeni (collage artist), Bambo Sibiya (printmaking, acrylic and charcoal artist) and Mbali Tshabalala (mixed media artist). Joining our boys were 160 Grade 11 and 12 art pupils and teachers from 12 Pietermaritzburg and Midlands-based IEB schools: Epworth, Grace College, Michaelhouse, St John’s Diocesan School for Girls, St Nicholas Diocesan School, St Anne’s College, St. Patrick’s, Treverton College, Deutsche Schule Hermannsburg, Kearsney College and The Wykeham Collegiate.

As part of the programme, each artist presented to the learners their art practice and demonstrated how they create their works. This will be followed by a Q & A session.

“It was a phenomenal day, and the artists really brought their magic to life. The pupils asked so many questions and were thoroughly involved in the experience,” said Angela Salamon, the head of visual arts at Hilton College. “We may well be doing this again next year!”
