Hilton College’s most valuable asset, after its people, is its world-class campus.
It is set on splendid grounds in the picturesque KwaZulu-Natal Midlands. Peaceful, unspoiled and off the beaten track, it is the perfect location for a boarding school.
The property faces north across the wide sweep of the uMngeni Valley and takes in the Karkloof Falls.
When the school was founded 150 years ago, it was little more than two thatched bungalows.
Today it is an array of impressive buildings: seven boarding houses, a chapel, museum, music block, theatre, art centre, innovation hub, memorial hall, gym, speech & drama theatre, and club house, to mention some.
Prominent on the 150-hectare campus are the Campbell Block, Crookes Block and Saunders Sanatorium, each donated by families close to the school.
Our boarding houses are arranged along the school’s circular drive. Named after our founders, two of the school’s first pupils and former headmasters, they are: Newnham, Lucas, Ellis, Pearce, Falcon, McKenzie and Churchill.
Hilton College owes its signature Cape Dutch architecture to the vision of William Falcon, who was headmaster from 1906 to 1933.
Beyond our campus is a 650-hectare proclaimed nature reserve, which is home to warthog, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest and six species of buck.
Here you’ll find two campsites with ablutions and ample space for camping.
This unique and special place is our “outdoor classroom”, which is well utilised by all of our boys, particularly during the Grade 8 Outdoor Leadership Experience and the Grade 10 Journey, when boys embark on a five-day exploration of the wild.
They connect with nature and learn the value of a supportive community, among other important life lessons.
