Position Vacant: Head Nurse – Hilton College Sanatorium

Hilton College is a leading independent boarding school for boys set alongside a beautiful nature reserve in the Kwa-Zulu Natal Midlands. Established in 1872, our prestigious school has been at the forefront of educational excellence and student well-being for over 150 years. The school attracts students from all over South Africa as well as a growing number of internationally based boys.

The Position:
Our sanatorium is integral to maintaining the health and wellness of our vibrant student community. The college is seeking a compassionate, dedicated, and highly skilled Head Nurse to lead our school sanatorium on a permanent, full-time basis. The successful applicant is expected to be able to takeup the post from July 2024 and will live on campus.

The Head Nurse role is to oversee the sanatorium operations and ensure the provision of professional health services to our students. This includes but is not limited to leading a team of nursing staff, managing health records, collaborating and liaising with parents, teachers, and administrative staff to create a safe and nurturing environment for our students.

The position would report to the Deputy Headmaster. The key responsibilities of the post are:

• Manage the daily operations of the school sanatorium, including staffing, scheduling, and administration.
• Provide primary healthcare and emergency treatment to students during shifts – including some night duties.
• Develop and implement health policies and procedures in line with current best practices.
• Organize and conduct health education programs for students and staff.
• Maintain accurate and confidential medical records.
• Lead, mentor, and supervise nursing and support staff.
• Liaise with external healthcare providers, parents, and school administration.

Qualifications and Experience:

• Valid nursing license and a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (BSN). Master’s Degree preferred.
• Minimum of 5 years of nursing experience, with at least 2 years in a leadership role.
• Experience in pediatric, school, or community health nursing is highly desirable.
• Have a dispensing licence or be prepared to get one.
• Excellent leadership, organizational, and communication skills.
• Strong decision-making skills and ability to handle emergencies with composure.
• A compassionate nature and a strong commitment to student welfare.

 Key Competencies
1. Clinical Expertise: 
• Proficiency in paediatric and adolescent health care, including the ability to diagnose and treat common ailments and injuries.

2. Leadership and Management Skills:
• Experience in managing a nursing team, including scheduling, training, and performance evaluation.
• Capability to develop and implement health policies and protocols.
• Proficient in budgeting and resource management within a healthcare setting.

3. Communication Skills:
• Strong verbal and written communication abilities to effectively interact with students, parents, teachers, and other staff.
• Skill in educating and advising students and staff on health-related issues.
• Capacity to handle sensitive information confidentially and share it appropriately with other healthcare providers, school staff, and families.

4. IT and Organizational Skills:
• High levels of computer literacy (Microsoft suite)
• Efficient in managing health records and documentation.
• Ability to coordinate with multiple stakeholders, including external healthcare providers and school administration.
• Competence in planning and conducting health promotion programs and activities.

5. Problem-Solving and Decision-Making Skills:
• Ability to assess clinical and administrative situations to make informed, timely decisions.
• Skill in crisis management, able to respond effectively to emergencies.

6. Adaptability and Flexibility:
• Ability to work under pressure.
• Readiness to respond to the varying health needs of students throughout the school year.
• Ability to adapt health programs to the changing needs of the school population.

7. Compassion and Empathy:
• Genuine concern for the health and well-being of children and adolescents.
• Ability to create a caring and supportive environment to reassure and comfort students.

8. Cultural Competence:
• Sensitivity and understanding of diverse backgrounds and cultures within the school community.
• Ability to provide inclusive care that respects the cultural, familial, and individual preferences of students.
