A total of 40 of the 106 Hilton College matric candidates achieved four distinctions or more
Statement by George Harris, Headmaster of Hilton College
The culmination of one’s schooling is the final exam our boys write as Matrics. The Class of 2020 did Hilton College especially proud in realising an outstanding set of results, despite the difficulties presented by the Covid-19 pandemic. The impressive performance of our boys, and the continued improvement of our results over the past three years, provides evidence of the value that we place on academics in our school.
For us, an ‘academic’ school is one that instils a life-long love of learning in our boys. For our matriculants to have achieved as they have, speaks to their resilience and their commitment to acquiring knowledge and interpreting information, as well their confidence in expressing themselves – despite a year of uncertainty and disruption. We thank the boys for partnering with our teachers to achieve their goals.
Credit too must go to our outstanding team of teachers and support staff for adapting to the very difficult circumstances that they found themselves in. Their emphasis on developing a good relationship with each boy over his first four years with us and inspiring their boys during an arduous fifth year bears testament to the love they have for their vocation and the boys under their care. As professional educators, they understand that each boy’s needs are unique, and they have used the technology at their disposal to provide for all their students to admirable effect.
Parents are critical members of the team that we build for each boy. This was not the year that parents envisaged, and they had to adapt to assisting their boys during periods of home study, as well as lengthy periods of not being able to see their sons when we locked down our campus and barred visitors to limit the risk of Covid infections. We thank our parent body for the exceptional support that they have provided.
Academic ability is not the primary requisite for admission to Hilton College. We also encourage our boys to take subjects that stretch and challenge them – and these are not necessarily subjects in which they can achieve good grades easily. We select boys whom we think we can partner with to become the truest and best version of themselves. We are therefore as proud of all the boys with barriers to learning who have secured a Bachelor’s Pass and entrance into a good university as we are of the 38% of our boys who achieved four distinctions or more.
Well done young men! Our school community will continue to follow your achievements with pride and we look forward to seeing you make a positive contribution to the world. We wish you well.
