Our Grade 11's have been involved in a Leadership Course since Sunday. The boys are covering a variety of topics and have also been participating in team building excercises.  It is good to see them working together in their various teams.

Congratulations to the Top 10 tennis boys who beat Michaelhouse 9-6 in a tightly contested match to retain the prized de Wet Cup. The team won it for the 4th consecutive time.

Some of the Grade 11 French class recently had an oral with a difference: they went for breakfast with Glenn Flanagan, from the Alliance Française, and Gabin, a visitor from the South of France. The class responded well to the challenge of not uttering a single word “en anglais” and shared some interesting school experiences, all “en français”.  For Gabin, his two nights in an all-boys boarding school was completely different from his co-ed “lycée” with 2000 pupils from Grade 10 to 12.

On the Friday night before OLE started, the Grade 10’s and 11’s from Hilton, Voortrekker, St Annes and St Johns danced to the beat of Afrikaans songs, played by the band Marakas. Those who had two left feet, feasted on Melktert and Koeksisters.

On Monday the 4th of August the History Department hosted a dinner to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of World War One.  The boys were given an audio visual presentation and listened to a short address by Mr Venter. Invited guests were Mr de Wet, Mr Davidge who is curator of the Hilton College Museum, Mr Andrew Robinson who is a Hilton College parent and history enthusiast and Mr Matthew Marwick who is Head of Boarding at Maritzburg College. Like Hilton, Maritzburg College also lost old boys and staff in that terrible conflict. In recognition of the strong links between the two schools, Mr Marwick was presented with a book on the heritage of Hilton College.
