Our Guest Speaker on Tuesday 11 October was Rory Steyn.  He was appointed team leader of Nelson Mandela's personal protection team, which entailed the protection of the President both nationally and internationally. His stories of humility, grace and humanity were hugely inspiring as it gave us an insider’s perspective of the great Madiba. It was a huge privilege to have him come and address us.

Congratulations to Jack Youens! He won Gold overall, Gold for rings, Gold for floor and Silver for vault at the SA Gym Games.

Aside from this excellent achievement, his sportsmanship was exceptional. He supported and applauded his competitors, comforted them when they did badly and was generally respectful and friendly right from the start.

Jack was a sterling ambassador for his province and Hilton College - we are very proud of you Jack!

Our choir attended the Drakensberg Boys’ Choir Concert yesterday afternoon. They thoroughly enjoyed it and a highlight was when the old boys joined the Drakensberg Boys' Choir for the last item on the programme.  The evening concluded with our talented choir entertaining the guests at the dinner venue with two songs.

On Thursday 6 October we hosted our annual Academic Dinner at the Fleur-de-Lys Club. This dinner seeks to celebrate the academic successes of our senior boys. Boys holding Colours or Honours awards in Grade 11 and Grade 12 are invited to the dinner which is also attended by teachers representing each of the different departments. This year our Guest and After Dinner Speaker was Hilton College’s 17th Headmaster, Mr George Harris. Mr Harris shared thoughts from a new book, “Peak – Secrets from the New Science of Expertise” (by Anders Ericsson and Robert Pool) which challenges many existing assumptions about intelligence and the way skills are acquired. The talk was fascinating and empowering and Mr Harris challenged our boys to vindicate the central hypothesis in the book, viz. that intelligence can be developed and grown.
