Disappointment in Sport

As we approach the end of an exciting winter sport season, I am reminded why we do what we do. The life lessons sport teaches will serve our boys far beyond their time at Hilton College. At university, in their careers and, dare I say, even in their marriages one day.

Arguably one of the greatest of these lessons is how to deal with disappointment, whether as a player or supporter. Think how often your favourite team has left you devastated, wondering what went wrong – you quickly realise that disappointment is part and parcel of sport.

Disappointment in sport is a certainty. On any given day, one team may simply be a little better than the other. A programme that has dominated for years may eventually be overtaken. A player will one day be replaced by someone younger, stronger, or more skilful. Even the greatest sporting dynasties come to an end. The New Zealand All Blacks experienced periods of decline after years of dominance, Manchester United fell from the heights of the Sir Alex Ferguson era, and the Australian cricket team that once seemed almost unbeatable eventually lost its grip on world cricket. Injuries, too, are part of the disappointment players must grapple with.

It is a fact one must make peace with: if you play or support sport, there will be disappointment. I believe sport often gives us far more trials and tribulations than triumphs and trophies. How we choose to respond to disappointments is where the true value of sport lies.

Over the past few years, I have been dismayed by how disappointment in sport is sometimes handled at schoolboy level. Across the country, we have seen spectators abuse match officials for making the wrong call, parents threaten coaches, and boys walk away from the game altogether after setbacks. More recently, I’ve been concerned by how some respond to missing out – whether on an award or selection for a team. In an era of instant gratification and a win-at-all-costs obsession, there exists an illusion that success in sport is linear: “If you do these things at this time, then this will happen, and you will get what you want.”

While this mindset may help promote hard work and discipline, it fails to account for the reality that unforeseen circumstances will inevitably arise. On top of that, sport requires a little luck from time to time. That is sport. In fact, that is life. It can be cruel, unfair, unpredictable and, at times, deeply disappointing. A measured response to disappointment seems almost unfathomable in today’s world.

“A gem cannot be polished without friction, nor a man perfected without trials,” the Stoic philosopher Seneca once wrote. I would like to make an urgent appeal to players, coaches, parents, and supporters to view
disappointment not as something to fear, but as an opportunity to develop resilience, perspective,
and character. Most importantly, we must model this response to the impressionable young men in
our care.

At Hilton College, we want our boys to compete fiercely and strive for excellence, but we also want them to understand that setbacks are not the end of the story. Often, the greatest growth comes not from victory, but from how one responds when things do not go according to plan. Sport remains one of the greatest classrooms for life because it teaches young men how to fall, how to endure, and ultimately, how to rise again.

Thank you to all who support us through the highs and the lows. We look forward to a strong finish to the winter season.

Kind regards,

Burger Nel
Director of Sport
