A glorious space

There is a kind of gentle alchemy that happens in the transition from boyhood to manhood. Out in our nature reserve, our boys enjoy profound downtime, a break from the structured school week and a space for real recreation. Without a timetable, entertainment or technology, boys have unlimited scope to ponder and to dream. Unspoiled environments inspire self-discovery and the realisation that we are all part of something greater than ourselves.

Learning from each other

From Grade 8, boys in groups of three can camp up to 5km from campus on weekends. This element of risk fosters self-sufficiency and confidence as they organise permissions, food, and safety protocols, taking responsibility for themselves for up to 48 hours. This freedom and responsibility help boys connect with their own wild nature and learn valuable life skills from each other.

Creating eco-warriors

There are no bins here; boys must leave only their footprints, taking their litter back to campus, which gives them a sense of the waste they create in 48 hours. We teach them how the environment has changed over time, including the deterioration in the quality of water in the Umgeni River, highlighting our joint responsibility for the land. Our conservation centre has two dedicated members of staff, who inspire boys to become stewards of our estate and environment. Every Sunday, boys participate in organized estate activities, from guided walks to writing poetry on the reserve.
