A letter from The Head – 30 January 2026

Dear Parents,
Becoming
As we come to the end of another eventful year, I’d like to thank you for your partnership and support. The task of raising a young man and helping him on his journey to adulthood is thrilling, however challenging it may also be.
Your approval of and your unconditional love for your son are the most valuable bulwarks against a relentless tide of negativity that is pervasive in today’s world.
Every young Hiltonian will have a trove of memories from 2025. Some will be of highlights; some will be of disappointment. They all make up the sum of the parts – they all direct us towards becoming.
It is this business of becoming that captures much of what an education is about. In this we are partners, working together to provide the optimal conditions for this becoming to be realised.
Teenaging is a torrid season to get through. It is beset with complex challenges of discovering oneself; of dreaming of grandeur; of craving popularity; of finding purpose. With the advent of the global (however fickle) stage, these challenges are easily amplified to the point of distortion.
The voice and presence of a parent is the antidote to the noisiness of the challenges. Remind your sons that time is a great gift; there should be no rush to the art of becoming. Indeed, it never stops.
Reassure your son; reaffirm him too. Shower him with love and trust him to make wise choices. Hold him to account – inherently he wants to make you proud. Anchor him in enduring values, entertain his aspirations, support his dreams, reinforce humility as a non-negotiable. They are not young for long; enjoy the moments of awkward becoming. We, too, were young once!
I look forward to a meaningful and rich 2026, as we continue to partner. Have a blessed Christmas.
Regards,
George Harris
