Where boys choose their academic journey

A tailored academic experience

We recognize that every boy has unique academic interests and ambitions, which is why we offer the advantage of choice. Your son can pursue the highly regarded South African IEB curriculum, known for its comprehensive and rigorous approach, or take his British GCSE and A Level examinations by following the internationally recognized British GCE curriculum offered through Cambridge and Pearson, which allows for specialization and in-depth study of fewer subjects, unlocking opportunities at top universities worldwide.

Both pathways are designed to equip our boys with the knowledge, skills, and character to thrive in a rapidly evolving world. With expert guidance from our academic staff, each boy can select the qualification that best aligns with his strengths, aspirations, and future goals.

We give boys the choice of IEB or British curricula, equipping them with the skills, knowledge, and opportunities to thrive.

Inspiring a lifelong love of learning

At Hilton, education is more than just achieving high marks – it’s about developing critical thinking, confidence, and a broad worldview. We cultivate curiosity, encourage intellectual growth, and inspire a love for learning that extends beyond the classroom. Enthusiasm and encouragement are the cornerstones of our academic environment, ensuring that boys find joy in discovery rather than simply performing for validation.

Excellence in academics and support

Hilton has a proud tradition of academic excellence, with our students gaining acceptance into top universities in South Africa and around the world.

Our world-class Student Support Centre provides exceptional assistance for boys with learning barriers, ensuring every student is equipped to reach his full potential. However, Hilton does not offer “easy” subjects – every boy is challenged to grow intellectually and embrace a commitment to academic rigor.

The challenge for many teachers is to teach less, and facilitate more

We don’t do entrance exams because our selection process is based on much more than academics alone. Among other things, we look at the teachers’ comments in each applicant’s reports as well as character references to assess whether a boy will respond to our ways of learning. We also glean a great deal from our interview with your family.

We expect a lot of our boys.

We stretch them to realise what they’re capable of. We celebrate the D student who pushes himself to attain a C as much as the A student who gets an A+. If your son gets 85% for a test but we know he’s capable of attaining 95%, we’ll challenge him to do better.

In a world where everything is interconnected, a cross-curricular approach makes complete sense.

Our Grade 8s elect to explore themes and ideas in various learning spheres. These spheres explore relationships between subjects, building 21st-century skills of thinking holistically and critically and linking interdependent concepts. When boys are given a choice, they will be more interested and invested. Our Grade 8s and 9s have immersive paired or solo project weeks, enjoying latitude within parameters. The topics boys choose are always exciting and surprising. Grade 11s take a deep dive into an extended essay (thesis) and get to go on an inspirational tour to Johannesburg, where they are exposed to various professions and industries.

At Hilton College, technology is an enabler, not a game-changer. Ours is a relatively conservative stance. Over the past three decades, personal computers and mobile phones have become household items for families with the means, but they haven’t revolutionised learning. We believe that the essence of creativity and deep learning is built through the richness of diverse, challenging experiences, and whilst we offer all our boys targeted teaching in how to leverage the power of transformational technologies like large language models, ultimately, we are unapologetic about our belief that transformative education hinges on the quality of human interaction and breadth of the learning experience.

Classrooms aren’t the be-all and end-all of learning.

Every term we host a “Heartbeat Day” when learners are taken out of the classroom and sometimes off-campus and theoretical academic concepts are brought to life. These days get boys’ hearts pumping about the material they’re working on.

If not used correctly, textbooks can be where learning goes to die.

We know that boys engage in anything that holds meaning for them. We bring meaning to work by stimulating debate and sometimes uncomfortable discussion in the classroom. We bring subjects to life by making them real: putting theory into current political and social contexts, and by collapsing subject silos.

In our experience, extra lessons can facilitate laziness during class time and so we are tempered in our approach to individual extra lessons from external tutors. There is no reason boys attending class and engaging regularly with their teacher shouldn’t be on top of their work.

Excellence begins with exceptional people

A little about our accomplished academics who bring learning to life.

Our Director of Academics, Dr Alexei du Bois, has taught in schools in Kenya, Canada and Cape Town and served as Hilton’s first Director of International Learning. He holds an MSc in Comparative and International Education and a DPhil in Education from the University of Oxford, where he studied as a Commonwealth Scholar.

In 2024, he was appointed as the Heimbecker Inspiration Chair for Experiential Education at Shawnigan Lake School in Canada, in recognition of his leadership in innovative teaching practices. Alongside his work as Director of Academics, he teaches IEB and A Level English at Hilton.

Deputy Director of Academics, Tania Hurley, brings 25 years of experience in education, having taught in both GDE and IEB schools. She holds a degree in psychology, an HDE, and a postgraduate qualification in special needs education, which have supported her leadership roles as Junior Secondary Phase Leader. In 2023 she was appointed into the position of Deputy Director of Academics at Hilton College.

Our head of Futures, James Webb, brings nearly two decades of experience in education to Hilton College. With a BCom from Stellenbosch University and a PGCE from Unisa, James has held a variety of leadership and teaching roles at respected independent schools in both South Africa and the United Kingdom, including Somerset College, Kingham Hill School and Hilton College.

The Futures Department which he now leads plays a pivotal role in guiding boys as they chart their personal and academic paths – helping them to grow in independence, identify enrichment opportunities, and prepare thoughtfully for life beyond school. James oversees all university applications, both locally and internationally, for Grade 12 students.

Our Head of International Learning, Katy McNeil, brings 14 years of teaching experience to Hilton College, including 12 years within an A Level context. Raised as an expat in Bahrain and Oman, and having attended international schools, Katy has first-hand experience of the A Level system and the academic culture that surrounds it. She has taught at respected South African schools including Uplands College and St John’s College in Johannesburg, before joining Hilton College to teach Chemistry and lead the development of international academic pathways.

The International Learning Programme she now oversees provides students with the opportunity to engage meaningfully with the iGCSE and A Level curriculum. Designed for ambitious learners who wish to extend themselves, the programme offers a distinct style of teaching and learning, characterised by greater academic depth, increased independence, and an early opportunity to specialise in subjects of genuine interest. Katy oversees the full International Learning pathway, guiding families and students from application through to graduation.

Curiosity unleashed: Hilton’s grade 8 & 9 Elective Programme

We believe learning should ignite curiosity, not tick boxes. That’s why our Grade 8 and 9 elective programme is designed to stretch young minds beyond the traditional curriculum – but without adding academic pressure. In a boys-only, boarding-only environment, we offer a safe space where learning is hands-on, joyful, and deeply personal.

Each boy chooses electives that reflect his interests – from drone coding and greenhouse design to music, creative arts, and introductory isiZulu or French. These hands-on subjects keep theory to a minimum and carry no formal assessments (except Advanced French).

Whether coding drones, building insect hotels, exploring servant leadership through community partnerships, or working on the school farm, boys engage in real-world experiences that build agency, empathy, and imagination. Our estate becomes a living classroom, nurturing well-rounded young men who are curious about the world and confident in their place within it.
