CRICKET

Hilton CricketCongratulations to James Ritchie who, at the recent Cricket South Africa awards, was awarded the Schools T20 cricketer of the year award. This is an incredible achievement. Well done James!

Congratulations also to Christopher Pistorius and Dylan Thomson who have both been selected for the South African U15 Indoor Cricket team that will be competing at the World Series championships in Christchurch, New Zealand, in September.

HOCKEY

Hilton College Hockey

Our provincial hockey players all enjoyed successful IPT tournaments representing KZN Inland. The U18A, U16A and U14A all won silver medals at the nationals with the U18A particularly unlucky not to win the gold - having dominated KZN Coastal in their final. Regardless, having all three Inland A teams making the national finals is an amazing achievement considering that we are such a small province! Particular congratulations must also go to Mr. Fairweather for his significant involvement with two of these teams, coaching both the Inland U18A and Inland U14A teams. Each of the B teams also played well in the A section. They successfully completed their mission to achieve a top 10 finish and, in so doing, they have retained Inland B in the national A division for 2019.

A major triumph for our Hockey Club was having five of our boys selected for the national programme. Congratulations to the following boys on this wonderful achievement:

  • Suubi Mugerwa-Sekawabe (SA U18A)
  • Alex Warren (SA U17A)
  • Rob Haynes (SA U16 High Performance Squad)
  • Ross Minter-Brown (SA U16 High Performance Squad)
  • David Tshebi (SA U16 High Performance Squad)

Following his selection Suubi Mugerwa-Sekawabe went on to represent South Africa in a three match test series against Australia. This team was coached my Mr. van der Merwe. The team were unlucky not to win the first two encounters, which were drawn 3 – 3 and 4 – 4 respectively. Australia won the final match 3 – 6. Well done Suubi and Mr. van der Merwe on these excellent performances.

Congratulations to William Crowe who was recently selected to represent the South African Schools polo team. He attended the South African Polo Association’s polo academy during the July holidays where he acquitted himself well gaining selection to the SA Schools team. The team will embark on a short tour to Zambia later this year.

ROWING

Hilton RowingDuring the holidays Rory and Patrick Plunket competed in the Holland Beker (Cup) Amsterdam for the second consecutive year. They won the Junior Men’s Double race (winning the gold medal and the Holland Beker trophy). In doing so, they beat the current Dutch National Champions – an incredible performance at a top international level. The next day they competed in the U23 division and finished in a credible 7th place overall. A further cause for celebration is that the pair have deservedly been selected to represent Zimbabwe in the upcoming World Junior Championships, which will be held in the Czech Republic in August.

RUGBY

Hilton College vs Michaelhouse

Our Rugby Club took a mixture of U18, U17 and U16 players to the 1st XV Independent Schools Festival held at Kingswood at the end of June. As we traditionally do not play a full strength team at this event, it presents a wonderful opportunity for us to “blood” many of our younger players (no less than 13 new caps!). Despite our lack of experience and size the boys played very well against three top teams, namely, St. Albans, Bishops and St. Andrews. In our first match the boys put on a stellar performance to convincingly “put away” St. Albans 33 – 0. In our second game we were matched against a very strong Bishops team. Although we trailed from early on we never gave up and almost snatched the victory from a 14 point deficit. In the end we narrowly lost 17 – 24. The final match was due to be another cliff hanger against St. Andrews. Fortunately, the boys fought back from a 12 – 17 deficit to narrowly win 19 – 17 – a true display of grit that will stand us in good stead come the 2019 season.

Congratulations to Gareth Schreuder (Craven Week) and Lorenzo Palacio Apez (Academy Week) who were called up to represent the KZN Sharks. All of our provincial players who attended the SARU national weeks put in an excellent account of themselves. The Sharks Craven Week team did exceptionally to qualify for the finals beating the SWD and the Free State Cheetahs in the run up. Unfortunately, they lost to WP in the final game. Well done Andrew, Gareth and Mr AC Blume! The Sharks Academy week team also did brilliantly beating Boland and the Golden Lions with their only loss to Western Province. Although Sharks U16 Grant Khomo team struggled in their first 2 games losing narrowly to Boland and then to SWD, they did well to bounce back and beat Griquas in their final match.

SOCCER

Hilton SoccerThe 1st XI made an official start to their season playing at the Kloof Soccer tournament over the first weekend of the holidays. This huge event attracts 32 teams from all over the country and is a wonderful opportunity to play against top teams. Our boys did exceptionally well through the pool stages winning 2 games and drawing 1 - to finish top of their group. From there they advanced to the play-off matches (the top 16 teams). This first knockout match was a tense affair. We took an early lead and then dug deep to hold off our opponents to win 1 – 0. In the quarter finals we faced a formidable Glenwood outfit, who came out firing from the start. After a torrid first half we were well behind (0 – 3) but did well to fight back with a goal of our own. In the end the boys from the Bluff were too strong on the day and we lost 1 – 4. Despite this loss, our boys did exceptionally to have ended amongst the top 8 teams in this major tournament.

Following a SAFA camp which took place in the holidays, Costi Christodoulou has been selected to represent our country at the U17 COSAFA Cup. This international tournament will take place from 19 – 31 July and will be held in Mauritius. We wish Costi all the very best of luck for this prestigious event.

TENNIS

The HCTC had a fantastic time touring the UK in the holidays. The boys played against a number of top schools and they gave a good account of themselves winning 6 out of the 8 matches played. A highlight was having the opportunity to play on a variety of surfaces including clay and grass. During their time in London the team also watched some top matches at Wimbledon Day 1. How fortunate! All-in-all the boys not only enjoyed themselves, they made significant improvements and have returned inspired for the new season. A final noteworthy mention is that the boys were exceptional ambassadors for Hilton and received numerous compliments for their fine behaviour and manners. Well done boys and staff!

WATER POLO

Hilton Water PoloLuke Tillim and TJ Joubert made the trip from Italy (leaving the HC tour early), to represent the South Africa U16 Water Polo team at the Pan Pacific Games in New Zealand. This event attracts top national and club teams from all over the globe so the team did exceptionally well to finish in 5th place overall.

Well done boys!
