Matric Results 2025

Excellence across IEB and Cambridge continues at Hilton College

Hilton College’s 2025 matriculants obtained a 100% bachelor’s degree pass rate and again produced outstanding results, with Hilton College boys scoring a combined average of 2.4 distinctions per candidate* across both IEB and Cambridge pathways, and ranking among the top IEB scholars in the country and the top Cambridge scholars in the world.

Of the school’s 116 matric candidates, 93 wrote the IEB examinations, 17 sat the full Cambridge A Levels, and six wrote AS Levels.

Hilton’s 93 IEB candidates achieved an average of 2.2 A symbols each and 81% of symbols awarded to Hilton’s students writing Cambridge A-Level subjects were A-star, A, B or C symbols resulting in a combined average of 2.4* A symbols per candidate for all 116 matriculants.

Hilton College headmaster George Harris said, “Matric results, as one measure of a successful schooling, are a culmination of hours of dedicated learning and application from pupils and teachers. I am proud of the results the Class of 2025 has achieved with notable achievements both from boys with strong academic capabilities, and from boys who have had to apply themselves with great determination. We celebrate every young man, and I thank every teacher, coach, and parent for the part they played in facilitating these results.”

IEB Top Achievers
Hilton’s Robert Hayward was placed on the prestigious IEB Outstanding Achievement list for marks in the top 5% in six or more subjects and a rating level of 7 in Life Orientation, while André Boshoff was named on the IEB Commendable Achievement list for scoring in the top 5% in five subjects and achieving a rating level of 7 in Life Orientation nationally.

The school’s scholar of the year was Robert Hayward, who was awarded eight distinctions earning an average of 93.29 percent, while the proxime accessit, André Boshoff, was awarded seven distinctions with an average 91.57 percent. Shaka Buthelezi also achieved eight distinctions. All three of Hilton’s top IEB boys plan to study actuarial science: Robert Hayward and André Boshoff are going to Stellenbosch University, while Shaka Buthelezi will be studying at UCT or Edinburgh.

Eight Hilton College boys who wrote IEB examinations achieved marks placing them in the top 1% in their subjects nationally. They are: Robert Hayward (for Economics and Physical Sciences); André Boshoff (for Afrikaans, Life Sciences and Life Orientation); Ben Erasmus (Afrikaans, Economics and Geography); Zac Sweidan (Life Orientation); Matthew Thomas (Life Orientation); Alex Pitman (Life Orientation); Daniel Askew (Life Orientation and Mathematical Literacy); and Chuhal Pillay (Life Orientation).

An impressive 82% of all symbols awarded to Hilton boys who wrote IEB examinations were A, B, and C symbols.

A Level Top Achievers
Hilton College produced its fourth cohort of A Level graduates in 2025.

  • While we await the release of further A Level results from Pearson International later in January, we are pleased to report our top achievers in the Cambridge International Examinations:

Full A Levels

  • Rupert Wright achieved A-stars in Physics and Mathematics.
  • Jordan Byres achieved an A-star in Chemistry and an A in both Mathematics and Physics.
  • Neil Grobbelaar achieved an A-star in Physics and an A in Mathematics.

AS Levels

  • Josh Grant achieved A grades for AS Level Geography, Economics and Business.
  • Robby de Beer achieved A grades for AS Level Mathematics and AS Level Physics.

University destinations for top A Level achievers

  • Rupert Wright is hoping to study aerospace engineering at the University Bath or Imperial College in the United Kingdom.
  • Jordan Byres is hoping to study engineering at Stellenbosch University.
  • Neil Grobbelaar is hoping to study engineering at Georgia Tech in the United States.

Eighty-one percent of symbols awarded to Hilton’s students writing Cambridge A-Level subjects were A-star, A, B or C symbols. Stellenbosch University and the University of Pretoria consider anything from an A-Level A-star to an A-Level C symbol equal to a distinction.

“Hilton College’s A Level cohort continues to grow, and this year’s outstanding results are a tribute to the boys’ hard work, resilience and determination, and to the expertise and commitment of our teachers. These results have opened doors to competitive programmes locally and internationally, with boys earning offers that reflect both their ambition and the strength of the A Level pathway,” said Katy McNeil, the school’s Head of A Levels.

Dr Alexei du Bois, the school’s Director of Academics, said the class of 2025 demonstrated remarkable progress and academic focus. “We are thrilled with these results and especially pleased that 85% of all of our Grade 12 learners improved on their Grade 11 and Trials results. Our boys and staff deserve the highest praise.”

Unlike most of the top schools, Hilton College is not academically selective, meaning the school does not subject applicants to entrance exams and admits boys with barriers to learning. The school has a dedicated student support centre to serve all of its learners.
